Canyonlands was established in 1964 as a 565 acre park in Southeastern Utah. The nearest town is Mobab; where lodging and food, both expensive, can be found.
Canyonlands is known for its desert landscape that was carved out by the Colorado River.
One of its most popular mesa is Island in the Sky- a huge, flat-topped mesa with panoramic overlooks. Other notable areas include the towering rock pinnacles - the Needles, the remote canyons of the Maze and the Native American rock paintings in Horseshoe Canyon. Whitewater rapids flow through Cataract Canyon.
