SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK
Paired With
KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK
Much of the beauty and the adventure of driving on curvy roads comes in the sixty mile trip up to the summit of Sequoia where the large trees start. One can enter the park at several places. One is to start at Bakersfield, take California 65 to Portersville and then to Exeter. Change to California Rt. 998 to Three Rivers, an entry small town to Sequoia NP. You enter the park after a few miles and then drive around 60 miles upward inside the park. In late fall until late Spring, chains are required! This is a very, very scenic trip with lots of pull-offs to take pictures. Before you go up the park road, plan the rest of your trip including where to stay. Lodging inside the park is extremely limited.
Kings Canyon NP links up with Sequoia and has no specific feature that compels one to visit it other that the entire huge park is one spectacular view after another. One sees Kings Canyon by driving though it sometimes going in/out the same way; other times going to Big Pine, California or Independence, California and Route 395. It is a hidden beauty of the national park chain and must be visited along with Sequoia.
