Acadia National Park (49,000 acres) was started in 1916 in the State of Maine as an Atlantic coast recreation area with most of its land located primarily on Maine's Mount Desert Island, Acadia's landscape is marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast. The park teems with wildlife; favorites are moose, bear, whales and seabirds. The bayside town of Bar Harbor, with restaurants and shops, is the most popular entrance to the park.
